Bringing Sensitive Topics to Life Through Custom AI Illustration and Clean, Confident Visual Design

Concept

While the script and structure were provided by the instructional designer, I was responsible for shaping how the story unfolded visually. This included interpreting emotionally heavy narrative elements and planning how they would be represented through visuals and interactions. I worked closely with the voiceover timing and slide flow to ensure a smooth learner experience that honored the seriousness of the content.

Build

Built in Articulate Storyline 360, the course incorporates a range of interaction types including click-to-reveal, layered feedback, and scenario visualizations. I used Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for asset cleanup and layout work, and integrated custom motion cues and transitions. The visual assets were created and managed for performance and accessibility across platforms.

Design

A major visual breakthrough in this course was using Ideogram AI to create custom character illustrations. These illustrations were tailored to match each scenario's emotional tone, setting, and diversity needs — something that would have been incredibly difficult to source through traditional stock imagery. Each image was carefully refined to ensure consistency, clarity, and cultural sensitivity. The overall visual language was intentionally understated, focusing on readability and reinforcing key learning moments without distraction.

Result

The use of AI-generated illustrations allowed for stronger visual storytelling without compromising speed or consistency — especially critical in courses that rely on narrative-driven engagement. The final build was delivered on time and praised internally for its tone-appropriate visuals and clean learner interface. This project has since influenced the approach to imagery in similar compliance topics where traditional photography can fall short.
